.60 Tacos Wednesday

Tacos are serious business.  I don't know one person that doesn't like tacos.  Not one person.  In Southern California, we have all kinds of tacos.  You think of it and we have probably put it in in a tortilla.  There are blogs just about tacos.  And blogs about tacos in LA, blogs about taco trucks and even blogs just about carne asada.  There is never a shortage of taco talk.

I've been known to pay overpay ($4 cough, cough) for a taco but sometimes you just crave a good, cheap one or even one from Taco Bell.  Tacos Mexico in Buena Park has .60 Tacos Wednesday from 8am-8pm, you can get Asada, Cabeza Al Pastor, Pollo, Carnitas, Tripas y Lengua!  (I could have sworn Buche was on the menu too)

The rice and beans is good stuff too - see that plate? Only $2!  They keep a condiment bar open with limes, chiles and carrots.  Lunch for 3 of us was under $10!

This happened...

Last month a couple of shiny new fruit carts showed up in our 'hood.  Right at the end of our block.  It was magical.  I don't think I'll ever leave the 'hood!  

Hubby finally got us a taste last week and the vendor told him that they confiscated the other cart and the property manager of the complex across us told him to get out.  Hood politics.  I hear business is good though.  Our huge cup was $5!  (Sorry for the cellphone picture. My camera is in the shop.)

On a Sunday Afternoon...

Omar turned the big one month yesterday and he was cranky as ever last night...

We think he gets that way when we take him out in the day.  Chris & I have always been busy bees so we figured that we'd take him out every couple of days to get him used to our routine but he's not having it.  I had to finish my last paper of the Spring Semester (Hallelujah!) by midnight tonight so Chris took Duke out for the day so I could concentrate on "organizational structures" and to give our little baby some quiet time.  It worked like a charm, Omar slept the whole day and I was able to get so much done!  

Chris did some grocery shopping and brought home tons of fruit so I made Mexican Fruit Salad aka Street Fruit Salad - You know, chunks of fresh pineapple, cantaloupe, cucumber and watermelon with fresh squeezed lime juice, chili powder and chamoy.  Mmm!  It also tastes really good with mango, strawberries and jicama.  Super refreshing and perfect for hot Summer days!

There is also a cream version of Mexican Fruit Salad called "Bionicos".            

Sometimes it's good with just lime juice & chili powder...
And sometimes it's better with chamoy!  Let it marinate in chamoy for an hour or more... That really sets it off!

Random Acts of Kindness.

My husband Chris is an amazing gentleman. We're teaching our sons to be the same.

I love when he stops to hold open the door for strangers, when he says, "Thank you" to someone holding open the door for us, when someone needs help grabbing something off a shelf and he asks if they need help... Most importantly, I'm proud of how he has stepped up to caring for 2 of our local Homeless men, Rudy & John.

Around the holidays - after Thanksgiving and before Christmas, I came up with the idea to make "Care Packages" for our local Homeless. There were a few we've seen around the neighborhood just doing their thing, never begging for money, never holding up signs. I mentioned on Facebook my idea and my coworker/friend Maria said she would like to donate too. So one afternoon we hit Dollar Tree and stocked up on supplies. I packaged up huge recycling Ikea bags and we left them in the truck to hand out whenever we saw them.

John was the first one Chris made contact with, he introduced himself, shook his hand and asked if he'd be interested in a care package - John said yes and since then, Chris has bought him a hot breakfast and stopped to give him $10 on another day.

Rudy is the 2nd one we watch over. Chris gave Rudy a care package too and since then, every can and bottle we've saved - we give the bag to Rudy to recycle. Rudy smiles so big when Chris pulls up.

We tried to give care packages to a Homeless lady we always see by the mall but she wasn't interested. It didn't discourage us though.

A couple months ago one of my friends on Facebook asked for crayons, coloring books, stuffed animals, socks, toothbrushes and toothpaste because she was going to visit India and wanted to give them to local kids. She returned this month and we got this picture. How precious!!!

A lot of times we get lost in our own lives that we forget to do for others. Giving does so much for your soul, try it sometime!

• (4) Tubs of Baby Wipes
• (4) Mini Deodorants
• One package of cough drops
• One package of mints
• One box of bandages
• (4) Packages of Rain Ponchos
• One 4 pack of Gum
• One 6 pack of Shavers
