Domestic violence happens more than 145 times each hour in the U.S. On average, three women die every day as a result. A majority of Americans agree that domestic violence is tough to talk about. More than one-third of Americans have never discussed the issue with family or friends and Purple Purse provides a conversation starter. Lacking financial knowledge and resources is the number one indicator of whether a domestic violence victim will stay, leave or return to an abusive relationship.
Did that catch your attention? I hope so. The facts are startling. The numbers are shocking but no surprise - it is sad that our news is filled with stories of domestic violence everyday. Throughout my career, I've witnessed firsthand some of my staff suffer from domestic violence. The first time it happened was when I was a manager in San Diego. She was younger than me, a hard worker but always flaky - some days she would show up early and other days she would be late or not show up at all. The day I started asking around was the day she showed up to work with a black eye and crying. I pulled her into my office to ask her what was going on. The minute we sat down, my phone rang and it was her husband looking for her. I told him she was on the floor and would call him back when she had a chance. He was clearly pissed off and I just wanted to find out what was going on. She told me that he hits her and chokes her but she can't leave him. He's the father of her children and she has nowhere to go.
I wish I could tell you she left him right then and there but she didn't. She stayed with him for a couple more years. This is why I am a huge fan of Purple Purse! For every purple purse passed through the end of October, The Allstate Foundation will donate $5 to YWCA. The Allstate Foundation will give up to $350,000 for programs aimed to help domestic violence survivors and stop the cycle of abuse. Visit PurplePurse.com for more information.
