My family celebrated Three Kings Day (Dia de los Reyes Magos) when I was a kid. My husband's family didn't. On our neverending quest to make traditions that work for our family - We sat down and I told them the beautiful story about The Three Wise Men following the star to Bethlehem arriving with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh for Baby Jesus.
It had been about 27 long years since I actually celebrated Three Kings Day but I vaguely remember that my huge family would have their nativity sets out since Christmas and would do the novena every night till January 6th. We would attend Mass on the 6th, have brunch at Ma's house (my great grandma) and there would be little plastic stockings with candy and cheap toys for all the kids. I loved being around our huge family, those were the best memories.
Since our children are multicultural, I researched Dia de los Reyes Magos from my husband's Mexican heritage and found that kids write a letter to The Three Wise Men and leave their shoes out on the 5th and on the morning of the 6th, their shoes are filled with gifts! How precious! We decided that we wouldn't celebrate the traditional Mexican way this year but there is hope for next year!
This year we celebrated with old friends who are like family to us. We ate good food and shared many laughs! After all, it is all about creating memories with family!

We were in the mood for Rosca de Reyes but they were so huge! So beautiful though!
We bought some pan dulce instead!
And look what I spotted! The plastic stockings that we would get after Mass! I really loved these as a kid!
